Managing Minor Orthodontic Issues at Home
General Soreness After Adjustments
Mild tenderness is common after braces are fitted or adjusted and usually settles within a few days.
Warm saltwater rinses and soft foods may help reduce discomfort.
Irritation of Cheeks, Lips, or Tongue
Orthodontic wax can be applied to brackets or wires that rub against soft tissues.
This often provides quick relief while the mouth adjusts.
Loose or Poking Wires
If a wire shifts, it may sometimes be gently repositioned using a clean pencil eraser or tweezers.
Wax can be used to cover sharp areas until professional care is provided.
Loose Brackets or Appliances
If a bracket is loose but still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with wax.
If it detaches completely, keep it safe and inform the clinic.
